Gambia Bar Association Legal Aid Clinic Supports Inmates with Donation

On Wednesday, 26th March 2025, the Gambia Bar Association (GBA) Legal Aid Clinic visited the Gambia Prison Service as part of its humanitarian efforts during the holy months of Ramadan and Lent.

The team was warmly welcomed by the Director General of Prisons. During the visit, they donated 12 bags of rice to support the well-being of the inmates. This donation shows GBA’s ongoing commitment to justice, fairness, and the dignity of all individuals, including those in prison.

As part of the outreach, the legal team met with six inmates who have been held on remand since last year. These individuals were taken to court by magistrates but have not yet been charged in the High Court, raising concerns about delays in the legal process.

State Counsel M. Mballow, who joined the visit, is now looking into these cases. He is trying to trace their legal files to understand what has happened and what needs to be done to move their cases forward.

The GBA Legal Aid Clinic is working hard to make sure everyone especially those who are vulnerable has access to justice. This visit is part of their broader mission to support prison reform, ensure legal representation, and promote fair treatment of inmates.
