GBA Legal Aid Team Donates to Mile 2 Prison and Provides Legal Support During Ramadan and Lent

On Wednesday, 26th March 2025, the Gambia Bar Association (GBA) conducted a Legal Aid Clinic at the Gambia Prison Service’s Mile 2 Prison as part of its humanitarian efforts during the holy months of Ramadan and Lent.

The team led by the President of GBA, Ms Neneh M.C Cham was warmly welcomed by the Director General of the Gambia Prison Service Mr. Ansumana Manneh. During the visit, the GBA donated twelve (12) bags of rice to the Gambia Prison Service as a token of support towards the wellbeing of inmates and as a means of GBA’s ongoing commitment to justice, fairness, and the dignity of all individuals, including those in prison.

As part of the outreach, the legal team met with six inmates who have been held on remand since the year 2024 and are awaiting trial. The GBA  in in collaboration with the Judiciary of The Gambia, the Ministry of Justice, the Inspector General of Police and the Gambia Prison Service intends to provide legal aid and assistance to persons who do not have legal representation and are in police custody and remand awaiting trial in order to the expeditious disposal of cases in the superior and subordinate courts, in line with our mandate.

In this regard, the GBA team were joined and assisted by Principal State Counsel from the Ministry of Justice, M. Mballow.

The GBA Legal Aid Clinic continues to serve the marginalized and vulnerable access justice through regular legal aid clinics and this visit is part of their broader mission to support prison reform, ensure legal representation, and promote fair treatment of inmates.
