Official Open Day of The GBA Secretariat

The Gambia Bar Association (GBA) celebrated the official opening of its secretariat on July 5th, 2024. The event was graced by members and esteemed stakeholders from across The Gambia. This milestone represents a significant step forward in the GBA’s commitment to promoting justice and the rule of law in the country.

Ms Neneh MC Cham, President of the GBA, delivered the opening speech, expressing sincere gratitude to all attendees. She provided an overview of the GBA’s ongoing projects, highlighting their support for the government in establishing a Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPO). This milestone represents a significant first step towards realizing a specialized institution for prosecuting perpetrators of human rights violations.

Mrs Penda Dibba, the new Executive Secretary, seized the moment to thank the GBA’s partners, including The British High Commission, and Democracy International, for their invaluable support in setting up the Secretariat. She expressed her eagerness to expand these partnerships, emphasizing the GBA’s aim to play a more leading and proactive role in promoting the rule of law and advancing human rights in The Gambia.

Continuing her address, Mrs Dibba outlined GBA’s strategic plans for the coming years, highlighting key focus areas such as legal aid clinics and welfare funds. These funds will address bereavements and discreetly assist members in distress. Other initiatives include a quarterly newsletter with a creative and useful literature accessible to everyone, a branding policy, and financial and procurement policy manuals. Following Mrs. Dibba’s comprehensive presentation, attendees were given a tour of the new secretariat, which will serve as a hub for the association’s activities and a resource center for members of the Bar.

Distinguished guests, including senior lawyers Mr. Sherrif M. Tambadou and Mr. Salieu Taal, shared positive sentiments and expressed their heartfelt delight at this auspicious occasion. They emphasized the importance of a strong and independent bar association in upholding democratic principles and ensuring access to justice for all Gambians. The opening of the GBA secretariat marks a new chapter in the association’s history and reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the legal profession in The Gambia. As the GBA continues to grow and evolve, it remains dedicated to its mission of promoting justice, upholding the rule of law, and protecting human rights. This event not only celebrates past achievements but also sets the stage for future initiatives that will contribute to the development of a strong and fair legal system in The Gambia.
