Neneh M.C Cham

Neneh M.C Cham is a seasoned legal practitioner with almost two and a half decades of active engagement in the legal landscape of The Gambia. Since her enrolment as ‘Barrister and Solicitor of The Supreme Court of the Gambia’, she has been a stalwart defender and advocate for human rights, with a particular focus on championing the rights of women, children, and other vulnerable members of society. Renowned for her unwavering commitment to justice, Ms. Cham has established herself as a leading authority in the realm of women and children’s rights, earning accolades and recognition for her tireless efforts.

Her passion for equality and justice shines through in her extensive pro bono work, where she offers vital legal services without hesitation to those in need. In recognition of her exceptional contributions, Ms Cham was honoured with the Award for the Most Outstanding Women Legal Practitioner at the prestigious maiden She Awards Gambia in March 2020.

Throughout her career, Ms Cham has been at the forefront of landmark legal battles in a myriad of cases: Constitutional, Human Rights, Women’s Rights and Sharia, spanning all courts of the land, setting precedents and contributing to our jurisprudence.

In addition to her courtroom advocacy, Ms. Cham serves as President of the Gambia Bar Association, having been elected to the position in December 2023. She is the Chairperson of the Board of National Agency for Legal Aid (NALA) and a member of the General Legal Counsel. Previously, she served as Vice Chairperson of the Faraba Banta Commission of Inquiry and President of the Female Lawyers Association Gambia (FLAG) from November 2011 to February 2016. Beyond her professional engagements, she actively contributes to numerous professional bodies and civil society organizations, both domestically and internationally, aligning with her vision for a more just and equitable society.
